The Indian Experience

Some photos from our sessions with Sunita Patel learning about Indian culture and lifestyle.

Toast Toppers

On Friday morning, ass part of breakfast week, we had a 'toast toppers' taste session. We firstly discussed the importance of eating breakfast and the types of things we have for breakfast. We then tried 7 different toast toppers. It was really great that lots of children tried things they hadn't tried before and also liked something that they didn't think they would like!

We tried jam, lemon curd, peanut butter, marmite, honey, chocolate spread and marmalade  We also tried croissants and brioche.

Christmas Term-Christmas Party

At the end of term, we had a great party afternoon where we got to wear our party clothes and play party games. Thank you to all the parents who provided us with food and treats for our party!

Christmas Term- Y5 trip to SWRA

Apologies for the delay in uploading these photos due to the business (and chaos) of Christmas and then temporarily misplacing my camera. I will now endeavour to get back on track with our class blog!

Before Christmas, Year 5 from Eagle and Owl class had a trip to SWRA to take part in a MFL Christmas themed morning. This involved games, acting, singing and eating and we had a great time.

Thanks to Mrs Maksymiw-Magan and Mrs Arnold for coming with us and for all the staff and students at SWRA for organising our activities .

Week 2

Over the first two weeks of the new school term we have been getting into our Asia topic. We have been using atlases to locate Asia and some of the different countries that make up this continent. We have looked at photos of life in an Indian village in order to see what they tell us about life and culture.

Front CoverIn literacy we are enjoying reading Rickshaw girl about Naima, a girl who lives in Bangladesh. We have been making great predictions as we read the story and have enjoyed discussing how these change as the story continues. We will finish reading the story next week and then get into writing our own story in another culture, magpieing ideas from this text.

In response to the story we have been starting part of our art work for this term which is looking at Alpana paintings. We have compared these with rangoli artwork.

As our class book we are really enjoying reading Grandpa Chatterji. We are discussing cultural similarities and differences and really enjoying the story.

Homework for week 2:
There is a competition run by the school council to mark next week's 'National Breakfast Week'. The task is to photograph a healthy breakfast in an artistic way. The children have looked at examples and we have discussed this in school. Entries should be handed in by Thursday 24th January.

Day 1:

Today we reflected on 2012 and thought about what we are looking forward to or hoping to achieve  in 2013. We have been learning about Janus who was an ancient Roman God. He had two faces, one looking forward and one looking back and so he could see the future and the past at the same time. He was the god of doors and gates and so of beginnings and openings. The month of January was named after him and was sacred to him. We used the idea of Janus to help us present our New Year Resolutions.

We will be starting work on our new theme tomorrow.
Here is a photo of our starting point display for our Asia theme. We will be adding to it with our work to show our learning over the coming weeks.

ICT Day

On Thursday 29th November we enjoyed an ICT curriculum day. We started off our day in the ICT suite where we went on maths, literacy or e-safety games. We then had a talk from Dan Hawbrook who helped us learn how to keep safe when using the internet. In the afternoon we enjoyed using the Pro-Bots. Here are some photos of the day.
